Transform Into A Punctual Person
By Dana Rayburn, Adult ADD Coach
ADDed Success is ADD Coach Dana Rayburn's monthly newsletter about
living
successfully with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD / ADHD).
Welcome to ADDed Success!
What's the second biggest gripe of Adults with Attention Deficit Disorder? If you
answered getting places on time, you're right!
(In case you're wondering, the biggest gripe I hear from ADHD Adults is being
disorganized.)
Yes, being late is a common complaint of people with ADHD.
Keep reading to discover my three favorite tips to transform you into a punctual
person.
Tip #1: Know how much time you TRULY need to get ready.
If it truly takes you an hour to get ready but you believe it takes you 45-minutes,
guess what? You'll be late!
Time yourself once or twice to get a realistic picture of the amount of time you
need. Most people don't realize how much time it takes to do all the things they
must do before dashing out the door.
Tip #2: Know how much time you TRULY need to get where you're going.
If you truly have a 30-minute commute but you think you need only 25 minutes to
get to work, guess what? You'll be late!
If you're going somewhere you go regularly, time yourself - remember to include
time for dashing back into the house to get things you've forgotten.
If you're going somewhere you don't often go, make your best guess and add a
cushion of a few minutes just to be safe.
Tip #3: Get ready FIRST before you do anything else.
This is my favorite tip of all; one I discovered by observing the on-time people in
my life.
Punctual people get completely ready to go BEFORE they get involved in other
things.
Late people, such as those with adult ADHD, do everything else first before getting
ready. Naturally, they don't allow enough time and they're rushed and late.
So, get ready to go BEFORE you watch the news, read the paper, chat on the
phone, water the plants or do what ever it is you do.
Here's an important point when you are ready early.
If you have ADHD accept you will get distracted and lose track of time. To pull out
of distractions set your timer to go off five minutes before you need to leave. Your
timer is your friend. Use it to stay on track and on time.
Learning to be a punctual person won't happen over night. This, as with much of
Outsmarting your ADHD, takes practice.
But it's well worth it.
Imagine how much calmer you'll be when you aren't constantly rushing; how much
better you'll feel about yourself when you arrive places on time.
The Last Word
Is it truly possible to convert from a late person to an on time person? Yes, I can
tell you from personal experience it is!
Before I began Outsmarting my ADHD I was always five to ten minutes late. Now,
I'm usually right on the dot punctual.
How'd I change? By using exactly the same tips I've shared with you today.
Go ahead. I challenge you to amaze yourself and impress your friends. Become a
punctual person.
