Four Steps for Slashing Your Credit Card Debt
By Dana Rayburn, Adult ADD Coach
It's amazing how easy it is to pull out that credit card and impulsively
buy whatever you want...until the bills and debt start to pile up!
What is
it costing you emotionally and physically to carry large amounts of debt?
What opportunities could you take advantage of if you could spend that
money on something other than credit card payments each month?
If you are committed to getting out of debt, here is an easy-to-apply plan
to help you out.
1. Cut up all your credit cards, except for one or two. Promise that each
month you'll pay off any new charges you add to the card(s) you're
keeping.
2. Figure out how to come up with $150 extra per month to put towards your
debt. This extra cash is key to achieving your aim. Be creative in cutting
non-essential purchases or increasing your income.
3. Apply the additional $150 to the monthly payment of only one of your
credit cards. You will now pay the minimum plus the $150 on that one card.
Pay only the minimum amount due on all your other credit cards. Often
people try to pay a little extra each month on all their cards only to end
up surprised that those cards never get paid off.
4. Once the first card is paid off, apply the total amount you were paying
each month on that card to the minimum payment on your next card. You are
now paying the minimum amount due on the second card plus the total
monthly payment you were paying on your first card. Continue this process
with all your credit cards and debt such as store charges. As you pay off
each debt, the monthly amount you are paying snowballs. As you pay off a
card you've cut up, be sure to close the account.
Follow this structured approach and you'll be amazed at how you finally
are able to become debt-free. Thanks to Robert Kiyosaki's "The Cashflow
Quadrant" for this idea.
