Hey, I have a teensy assignment for you that’ll make living with your ADHD easier. It’s a little ADHD hack – something that can make you feel better and not so down on yourself. Trust me, struggling with ADHD can really get you down sometimes.
So, here’s what I want you to try. Say the phrase, “I approve of myself” at least 100 times a day. Don’t make it a big deal, just say it casually as you go about your day.
You can say it while you’re brushing your teeth, or even while checking your email. No need to keep count or make a chart. Just repeat the phrase, “I approve of myself” often as you move through your day.
And, bonus points if you say it while looking at yourself in the mirror!
Now, I know if you’re a normal ADHD adult (whatever “normal” means) who tends to be hard on yourself, this might feel a bit uncomfortable. You might resist it at first, maybe even shed a tear or two. Trust me, that’s totally normal. I’ve been there too. For years, I used to say really mean things to myself, things that weren’t even true.
Changing the way you talk to and treat yourself can be tough, especially when you’ve spent a lifetime being bombarded with negative comments and messages. But it’s an important step for making your life with ADHD a little bit easier.
The world can be tough on us for the way our brains work, so it’s even more crucial that we show ourselves some kindness. We deserve it, just like everyone else.
Repeating “I approve of myself” doesn’t mean you’re pretending that you don’t have a lot of work to do to manage those ADHD slip-ups and challenges. It’s just a way to make that work a little bit easier. So go ahead and give it a try as you go through your day. Good luck!
And hey, let me know how it goes. I’m rooting for you!
