When I ask new ADHD coaching clients the three things they’d like to change in the first six months of coaching the answers vary – getting organized with ADHD, finishing projects, planning, delegating – but one thing most new clients tell me is they want to learn how to get places on time.
Rushing places because you’re late is stressful. But not being on time is a bigger problem than that.
In the world of business your reputation matters. And, it’s hard to be taken seriously as a business owner or a professional if you’re always late.
Most people don’t care that you struggle to manage Attention Deficit and it’s hard for you to get places on time because you got distracted or hyper-focused. They don’t care that your disorganization kept you from finding what you needed so you were frantically rushing out the door.
What other people do care about is that you kept them waiting which is a sign that you don’t respect their time.
An ADHD Success Tip: How To Get Places On Time
When it comes to being successful in the business world you’ve got to learn to be on time. In the United States anyway, being punctual is a basic signal that you can be trusted.
Luckily I’ve discovered how organized, punctual people keep from being late. It’s not rocket science. You can do it, too.
You have to get ready first.
Yep. It’s as simple as that. Get ready to leave before you check your email, update your Facebook status, watch TV, etc.
Getting ready first includes gathering all the stuff you need to take with you and have it waiting by the door.
Most ADHD adults do it the other way. They do everything else first and then get ready to go. That approach means they’re likely to get distracted and run out of time.
So, if you’re ready to get places on time, switch things up, try getting ready first.
