Successfully managing adult ADHD isn’t an impossible dream. Where do you start? Here, of course! These six truths are not self-evident so you’d be wise to read them.
1. Build your life around your strengths and avoid your weaknesses. What ADHD adult hasn’t been told to just try harder? Yet trying harder rarely works for someone with Attention Deficit. You’ve got to outsmart your ADHD. Stop trying to get better at the things you’re not good at. Successfully managing adult ADHD comes from building a strength focused life. Focusing your world on your weaknesses is the direct road to procrastination and frustration.
2. Making lasting changes to how you manage ADHD takes time plus focused intention. There are no silver bullets. Looking for a quick fix will only disappoint you. Sustainable change comes from small improvements over time. Before giving up on a new ADHD management technique give it enough time to work. Check your impulsivity. Make sure your expectations of how long it takes to achieve results are realistic.
3. First-class brain care is mandatory. Your ADHD brain is like a high-performance race car. Both require tip-top support to run at peak performance. Starving your brain of the care it needs will only make your ADHD symptoms worse. How do you support your brain? Start by living the three E’s: enough sleep, eat protein, and exercise.
4. In order for your ADHD symptoms to change, YOU have to change. Since your ADHD is an extension of you, you’ll need to adjust how you think and how you act. Focusing on skills like organizing or time management is important. But resisting self-awareness will make your goals harder to reach. Real-world actions must join internal changes to successfully manage adult ADHD symptoms.
5. No single treatment is THE answer for managing Attention Deficit. ADHD is complicated. Studies show the best results come from what’s called “multi-modal” treatment. Think of it as attacking ADHD on all fronts. Balancing your brain chemistry with medication, exercise, sleep, and diet. Learning new behavior and life skills through ADHD coaching. Overcoming negative thinking patterns and emotional scars that often go hand in hand with ADHD through therapy.
6. Getting the right support is essential to your success. Simply put, Adults with ADHD can’t go it alone. To succeed they need a structure of support from both tools and humans. Tools to keep you on track and focused. Things like reminders, timers, and planners. Human support provides treatment, training, guidance, and structure. A helping hand from a physician, therapist, ADHD coach, house cleaner, or friend. Needing support for ADHD isn’t a sign of weakness or a crutch; it’s a reality.
